Nicholas Winton

Sir Nicholas Winton is a retired British stockbroker. He was born in London, and while working in the City in 1938 he decided to do what he could about the persecution of Jewish communities in continental Europe. He organized the "Kindertransport" rescue of 669 Jewish Czech children. Winton's role was not publicly acknowledged until the 1980s; he is sometimes nicknamed "Britain’s Schindler."

• I just saw what was going on and did what I could to help.

• From the German point of view there was really very little difficulty. The only problem was to get permits for the children to enter England and to fulfil the conditions which were laid down by the Home Office, which was that I could only bring a child if I had a family that would look after them. It was a lot of hard work, but it wasn't difficult.
