Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi is a 1983 space opera film. It is the final film of the original Star Wars trilogy. The film is set one year after the Battle of Hoth. Luke Skywalker and members of the Rebel Alliance travel to Tatooine to rescue their friend Han Solo from the vile Jabba the Hutt. Meanwhile, the Galactic Empire plans to crush the Rebellion with a second Death Star while the Rebel fleet simultaneously prepares to launch a full-scale attack on this new space station. Luke confronts his father, Darth Vader, in a final climactic duel before the evil Emperor Palpatine.

Admiral Ackbar

You can see here, the Death Star, orbiting the forest moon of Endor. Although the weapon systems on this Death Star are not yet operational, the Death Star does have a strong defence mechanism. It is protected by an energy shield which is generated on the nearby forest moon of Endor. The shield must be deactivated if any attack is to be attempted.
It's a trap!
All craft, prepare to jump into hyperspace on my mark!
The shield is down! Commence attack on the Death Star's main reactor.
We've got to give those fighters more time. Concentrate all fire on that Super Star Destroyer.

[Darth Vader steps out of his shuttle on the Death Star.]

Moff Jerjerrod: Welcome, Lord Vader. This is an unexpected pleasure. We are honored by your presence.

Darth Vader: You may dispense with the pleasantries, Commander. I am here to put you back on schedule.

Moff Jerjerrod: I assure you, Lord Vader, my men are working as fast they can.

Darth Vader: Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate them.

Moff Jerjerrod: I tell you that this station will be operational as planned.

Darth Vader: [stops and holds up his finger at Jerjerrod] The Emperor does not share your optimistic appraisal of the situation.

Moff Jerjerrod: But he asks the impossible! I need more men!

Darth Vader: Then perhaps you can tell him yourself when he arrives.

Moff Jerjerrod: [alarmed] The Emperor's coming here?

Darth Vader: That is correct, Commander, and he is most displeased with your apparent lack of progress.

Moff Jerjerrod: We shall double our efforts.

Darth Vader: I hope so, Commander, for your sake. The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am. [resumes walking]

[Boushh, a bounty hunter, has just freed Han Solo from the carbonite slab.]

Boushh: [distorted, gravelly voice] You have to relax for a moment. You're free of the carbonite. You have hibernation sickness.

Han Solo: [shaking] I can't see.

Boushh: Your eyesight will return in time.

Han Solo: Where am I?

Boushh: Jabba's palace.

Han Solo: Who are you?

[Boushh removes the helmet, revealing him/herself to be Princess Leia]

Princess Leia Organa: Someone who loves you.

Han Solo: Leia!

[Jabba the Hutt and his entourage catch Leia rescuing Han]

Han Solo: Hey, Jabba. Look, I was just on my way to pay you back, but I got a little sidetracked! It's not my fault--

Jabba the Hutt: It's too late for that, Solo. You may have been a good smuggler, but now you're Bantha fodder! [to Gamorrean Guards] Take him away!

Han Solo: [being dragged away by the Guards] Jabba... I'll pay you triple! You're throwing away a fortune here! Don't be a fool!...

[Lando attempts to lead Leia away]

Jabba: Bring her to me.

[Leia is forced towards Jabba]

Princess Leia Organa: We have powerful friends. You're gonna regret this.

Jabba: [grinning] I'm sure.

[Luke arrives at Jabba's palace]

C-3PO: At last! Master Luke's come to rescue me.

Bib Fortuna: [to Jabba, in Huttese] Master... Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight.

Jabba: I told you not to admit him.

Luke Skywalker: I must be allowed to speak.

Bib Fortuna: He must be allowed to speak--

[Jabba punches Fortuna aside]

Jabba: You weak-minded fool! He's using an old Jedi mind trick!

Luke Skywalker: You will bring Captain Solo and the Wookiee to me.

Jabba: Your mind powers will not work on me, boy.

Luke Skywalker: Nevertheless, I'm taking Captain Solo and his friends. You can either profit by this... or be destroyed! It's your choice. But I warn you not to underestimate my powers.

[Jabba notices that Luke is standing on the trapdoor to the Rancor pit, and laughs cruelly]

C-3PO: Master Luke, you're standing on--

Jabba: There will be no bargain, young Jedi. I shall enjoy watching you die.

Han Solo: Together again.

Luke Skywalker: Wouldn't miss it.

Han Solo: How are we doing?

Luke Skywalker: The same as always.

Han Solo: That bad, huh?

C-3PO: Oh, dear. His High Exaltedness, the great Jabba the Hutt, has decreed that you are to be terminated immediately.

Han Solo: Good. I hate long waits.

C-3PO: You will therefore be taken to the Dune Sea and cast into the Pit of Carkoon, the nesting place of the all-powerful Sarlacc.

Han Solo: Doesn't sound so bad.

C-3PO: In his belly, you will find a new definition of pain and suffering, as you are slowly digested over a thousand years.

Han Solo: On second thought, let's pass on that, huh?

Luke Skywalker: You should've bargained, Jabba. This is the last mistake you'll ever make.

[En route to the Pit of Carkoon]

Han Solo: I think my eyes are getting better. Instead of a big dark blur, I see a big light blur.

Luke Skywalker: There's nothing to see. I used to live here, you know.

Han Solo: You're gonna die here, you know. Convenient.

Luke Skywalker: Just stick close to Chewie and Lando. I'm taking care of everything.

Han Solo: Oh, great.

[Luke returns to Yoda's hut on Dagobah.]

Master Yoda: That face you make. Look I so old to young eyes?

Luke Skywalker: No. Of course not.

Master Yoda: I do, yes, I do! Sick have I become... old and weak. When nine hundred years old you reach, look as good you will not, hmm? [laughs, then starts coughing] Soon will I rest. Yes, forever sleep. Earned it, I have.

Luke Skywalker: Master Yoda, you can't die.

Master Yoda: Strong am I in the Force... but not that strong. Twilight is upon me, and soon night must fall. That is the way of things, the way of the Force. [climbs into bed and pulls the covers over himself]

Luke Skywalker: But I need your help. I've come back to complete the training.

Master Yoda: [sighs] No more training do you require. Already know you that which you need.

Luke Skywalker: Then I am a Jedi.

Master Yoda: Ohhh! [turns back toward Luke and laughs, before coughing again] Not yet. One thing remains: Vader. You must confront Vader! Then, only then, a Jedi will you be. And confront him you will.

Luke Skywalker: Master Yoda, is Darth Vader my father?

Master Yoda: [pauses, turns back over away from Luke] Rest, I need. Yes... rest.

Luke Skywalker: Yoda, I must know.

Master Yoda: [pauses again] Your father he is. Told you, did he?

Luke Skywalker: Yes.

Master Yoda: Unexpected this is, and unfortunate.

Luke Skywalker: Unfortunate that I know the truth?

Master Yoda: [turns back to Luke again] No! Unfortunate, that you rushed to face him! That, incomplete was your training! That, not ready for the burden were you.

Luke Skywalker: I'm sorry.

Master Yoda: Remember, a Jedi's strength flows from the Force. But beware: Anger, fear, aggression. The Dark Side are they. Once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. [growing weak] Luke... Luke... Do not... Do not underestimate the powers of the Emperor, or suffer your father's fate, you will. Luke, when gone am I, the last of the Jedi will you be. Luke, the Force runs strong in your family. Pass on what you have learned. [very weakly] Luke... there is... another... Sk-Sky...walk...er... [lies still, fading into nothing a moment later]

[Yoda has passed into The Force, Luke is sitting outside his hut with R2]

Luke Skywalker: I can't do it, R2. I can't go on alone.

Obi-Wan Kenobi: [voice emanates from nowhere] Yoda will always be with you. [reveals himself as a spirit walking nearby]

Luke Skywalker: Obi-Wan! Why didn't you tell me?! You told me Vader betrayed and murdered my father!

Obi-Wan Kenobi: Your father was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I told you was true, from a certain point of view.

Luke Skywalker: [incredulously] A certain point of view?

Obi-Wan Kenobi: Luke, you will find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view. Anakin was a good friend. When I first knew him, your father was already a great pilot. But I was amazed how strongly the Force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him as a Jedi. I thought that I could instruct him just as well as Yoda. I was wrong.

Luke Skywalker: There is still good in him.

Obi-Wan Kenobi: He's more machine now than man. Twisted and evil.

Luke Skywalker: I can't do it, Ben.

Obi-Wan Kenobi: You cannot escape your destiny. You must face Darth Vader again.

Luke Skywalker: I can't kill my own father!

Obi-Wan Kenobi: [resigned] Then the Emperor has already won. You were our only hope.

Luke Skywalker: Yoda spoke of another.

Obi-Wan Kenobi: The other he spoke of is your twin sister.

Luke Skywalker: But I have no sister.

Obi-Wan Kenobi: [nods] Mm. To protect you both from the Emperor, you were hidden from your father when you were born. The Emperor knew, as I did, that if Anakin were to have any offspring, they would be a threat to him. That is the reason why your sister remains safely anonymous.

Luke Skywalker: [with sudden realization] Leia! Leia's my sister!

Obi-Wan Kenobi: Your insight serves you well. Bury your feelings deep down, Luke. They do you credit, but they could be made to serve the Emperor.

[The Emperor has summoned Darth Vader to his chamber.]

Darth Vader: What is thy bidding, my master?

The Emperor: Send the fleet to the far side of Endor. There it will stay until called for.

Darth Vader: What of the reports of the rebel fleet massing near Sullust?

The Emperor: It is of no concern. Soon the rebellion will be crushed and young Skywalker will be one of us. Your work here is finished, my friend. Go to the command ship and await my orders.

Darth Vader: Yes, my master.

C-3PO: I do believe they think I am some kind of god.

Han Solo: Well, why don't you use your divine influence and get us out of this?

C-3PO: I beg your pardon General Solo, but that just wouldn't be proper.

Han Solo: Proper???

C-3PO: It's against my programming to impersonate a deity.

[Luke has stepped out of the Ewok party. Leia joins him.]

Princess Leia Organa: Luke, what's wrong?

Luke Skywalker: Leia, do you remember your mother? Your real mother?

Princess Leia Organa: Just a little bit. She died when I was very young.

Luke Skywalker: What do you remember?

Princess Leia Organa: Just images, really. Feelings.

Luke Skywalker: Tell me.

Princess Leia Organa: She was very beautiful. Kind, but sad. Why are you asking me all this?

Luke Skywalker: I have no memory of my mother. I never knew her.

Princess Leia Organa: Luke, tell me. What's troubling you?

Luke Skywalker: Vader's here. Now, on this moon.

Princess Leia Organa: How do you know?

Luke Skywalker: I felt his presence. He's come for me. He can feel when I'm near. That's why I have to go. As long as I stay, I'm endangering the group and our mission here. I have to face him.

Princess Leia Organa: Why?

Luke Skywalker: He's my father.

Princess Leia Organa: [disgusted] Your father?!

Luke Skywalker: There's more. It won't be easy for you to hear it, but you must. If I don't make it back, you're the only hope for the Alliance.

Princess Leia Organa: Luke, don't talk that way! You have a power I don't understand and could never have.

Luke Skywalker: You're wrong, Leia. You have that power too. In time you'll learn to use it as I have. The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it and... [looks directly at Leia] My sister has it. [waits for the words to sink in] Yes. It's you, Leia.

Princess Leia Organa: [astonished] I know. Somehow, I've always known.

Luke Skywalker: Then you know why I have to face him.

Princess Leia Organa: No! Luke, run away, far away! If he can feel your presence, then leave this place! I wish I could go with you.

Luke Skywalker: No, you don't. You've always been strong.

Princess Leia Organa: But why must you confront him?

Luke Skywalker: Because there is good in him. I've felt it. He won't turn me over to the Emperor. I can save him. I can turn him back to the good side. I have to try. [kisses Leia on the cheek, then leaves]

[A moment later, Han approaches Leia.]]

Han Solo: Hey, what's goin' on?

Princess Leia Organa: Nothing. I just want to be alone for a little while.

Han Solo: Nothing? Come on, tell me. What's goin' on?

Princess Leia Organa: [distressed] I... I can't tell you!

Han Solo: [angrily] What, could you tell Luke? Is that who you could tell?

Princess Leia Organa: [crying] I— [turns away from Han]

Han Solo: [grunts angrily and starts to storm away, but stops and returns to Leia a moment later] I'm sorry.

Princess Leia Organa: [leaning against Han] Hold me.

[Luke surrenders himself to Darth Vader.]

Darth Vader: The Emperor has been expecting you.

Luke Skywalker: I know, father.

Darth Vader: So, you have accepted the truth?

Luke Skywalker: I've accepted the truth that you were once Anakin Skywalker, my father.

Darth Vader: [firmly] That name no longer has any meaning for me!

Luke Skywalker: It is the name of your true self. You've only forgotten. I know there is good in you. The Emperor hasn't driven it from you fully. [steps off to the side of the passageway, away from Vader] That was why you couldn't destroy me. That's why you won't bring me to your Emperor now.

[Vader turns on Luke's lightsaber and holds it up]

Darth Vader: I see you have constructed a new lightsaber. Your skills are complete. Indeed you are powerful, as the Emperor has foreseen. [turns off the lightsaber again]

Luke Skywalker: Come with me!

Darth Vader: Obi-Wan once thought as you do. You don't know the power of the Dark Side! I must obey my master.

Luke Skywalker: I will not turn. And you'll be forced to kill me.

Darth Vader: If that is your destiny.

Luke Skywalker: Search your feelings, father. You can't do this. I feel the conflict within you!

Darth Vader: There is no conflict.

Luke Skywalker: Let go of your hate!

Darth Vader: It is... too late for me, son. The Emperor will show you the true nature of the Force. He is your master now.

Luke Skywalker: [resigned] Then my father is truly dead.

The Emperor: Welcome, Young Skywalker, I have been expecting you. You no longer need those. [uses the Force to detach Luke's cuffs] Guards, leave us. [the Emperor's guards leave the room] I'm looking forward to completing your training. In time, you will call me master.

Luke Skywalker: You're gravely mistaken. You won't convert me as you did my father.

The Emperor: Oh no, my young Jedi. You will find that it is you who are mistaken. About a great many things.

Darth Vader: [hands Luke's lightsaber to the Emperor] His lightsaber.

The Emperor: Ah yes, a Jedi's weapon, much like your father's. By now you must know that your father can never be turned from the Dark Side. So will it be with you.

Luke Skywalker: You're wrong. Soon I'll be dead, and you with me.

The Emperor: [laughing] Perhaps you refer to the imminent attack of your Rebel fleet? Yes, I assure you, we are quite safe from your friends here.

Luke Skywalker: Your overconfidence is your weakness.

The Emperor: Your faith in your friends is yours.

Darth Vader: It is pointless to resist, my son.

Lando Calrissian: But how could they be jamming us if they don't know... [realisation dawning] if we're coming... [over comlink] Break off the attack! The shield is still up!

Wedge Antilles: I get no reading. Are you sure?

Lando Calrissian: Pull up! All craft, pull up!

Admiral Ackbar: Take evasive action! Green group, stick close to holding section MV-7!

Captain Verrack: Admiral! We have enemy ships in sector 47!

Admiral Ackbar: It's a trap!

The Emperor: Come, boy. See for yourself. From here you will witness the final destruction of the Alliance, and the end of your insignificant Rebellion.

[Luke is growing visibly angry, and looks at his lightsaber, which is sitting on the arm of the Emperor's chair.]

The Emperor: [glancing at the lightsaber] You want this, don't you? The hate is swelling in you now. Take your Jedi weapon. Use it! I am unarmed. Strike me down with it! Give in to your anger! With each passing moment, you make yourself more my slave!

Luke Skywalker: [turning away, attempting to calm himself down] No.

The Emperor: It is unavoidable. It is your destiny. You, like your father, are now mine!

[The Mon Calamari cruiser Liberty is destroyed by the Death Star]

Lando Calrissian: That blast came from the Death Star. That thing's operational! [to Admiral Ackbar] Home One, this is Gold Leader.

Admiral Ackbar: We saw it. All craft, prepare to retreat!

Lando Calrissian: We won't get another chance at this, Admiral.

Admiral Ackbar: We have no choice, General Calrissian! Our cruisers can't repel firepower of that magnitude!

Lando Calrissian: Han'll have that shield down. We've got to give him more time!

Lando Calrissian: Yes, I said closer! Move as close as you can and engage those Star Destroyers at point blank range!

Admiral Ackbar: At that close range we won't last long against those Star Destroyers!

Lando Calrissian: We'll last longer than we will against that Death Star, and we might just take a few of them with us!

[Leia, after shooting a storm trooper, flashes a gun to Han.]

Han Solo: [smiles] I love you.

Princess Leia Organa: I know.

Darth Vader: [searching for Luke in the Emperor's chamber] You cannot hide forever, Luke.

Luke Skywalker: I will not fight you.

Darth Vader: Give yourself to the Dark Side. It is the only way you can save your friends. Yes, your thoughts betray you. Your feelings for them are strong. Especially for... [pauses] Sister! So, you have a twin sister. Your feelings have now betrayed her too. Obi-Wan was wise to hide her from me. Now his failure is complete. If you will not turn to the Dark Side, then perhaps she will!

Luke Skywalker: [revealing himself] Never!

[Luke attacks Vader ferociously, eventually backing him onto a railing and cutting off his arm. He stands over Vader for a moment.]

The Emperor: [laughing] Good! Your hate has made you powerful. Now, fulfill your destiny and take your father's place at my side!

Luke Skywalker: [Notices Vader's detached hand is bionic, like is own, has a realization, then turns to face the Emperor, throwing away his lightsaber] Never. I'll never turn to the Dark Side. You have failed, your highness. I am a Jedi, like my father before me.

The Emperor: [angrily] So be it... Jedi!

[Luke refuses to give in to the Emperor's demands and disarms himself.]

The Emperor: [raising his hands toward Luke] If you will not be turned, you will be destroyed!

[Lightning shoots out of the Emperor's fingers and strikes Luke, causing him to fall to the floor in agony. Darth Vader gets up and stands next to the Emperor, watching.]

The Emperor: Young fool. Only now, at the end, do you understand. [shoots another round of lightning into Luke] Your feeble skills are no match for the power of the Dark Side! You have paid the price for your lack of vision! [continues shooting lightning at Luke]

Luke Skywalker: [writhing in agony] Father, please!

The Emperor: Now, young Skywalker... you will die.

[Luke is attempting to drag his dying father to a nearby shuttle on the Death Star, but they both fall to the ground.]

Anakin Skywalker: Luke, help me take this mask off.

Luke Skywalker: But you'll die!

Anakin Skywalker: Nothing can stop that now. Just for once, let me look on you with my own eyes.

[Luke carefully removes Vader's mask to reveal Anakin's disfigured face underneath.]

Anakin Skywalker: Now, go my son. Leave me.
